This is the first post in a 3-part series of guest posts by the ever-awesome Aimee Laine. An author seeks to tell a story. A reader seeks to be entertained, educated, fascinated, revolted, aroused, surprised — the list goes on.
How then, does the author marry words to reach a reader? Thereinlies the big, scary critique. Take a look at a critique example: I covered my ears with the side of my hands as if that would help, but the paper slipped from me.
What does this tell the writer? She should delete a few words? Or is it something bigger? The latter of course, and its a simple answer. How, then, can we convey a critique message in the best way possible?
Follow a 5-part method: In our critique, are we messing with formatting, placement or structure of a paragraph for consistency or based on our own opinions? Our author defines the world for us, and we, the reader, have to disassociate ourselves from what we think we know and let ourselves float along in the world created in that one story.
Errors, though, can be pointed out early on. Dissect That frog whereby frog is novel, novella, short story, script, play, flash fiction, etc. A burst of wind startled me. Showing will pull the readers deeper into the action.
In my opinion, you should probably change half of it into showing. Clearly the reader read the piece.
